Bulova Precisionist 98B142
The Precisionist lives up to its name by being one of the most accurate watches in the world. While most quartz watches are accurate to 15 seconds a month, Bulova’s Precisionist carries a slight variance of 10 seconds a year. Bulova achieves this by using its patented three pronged quartz crystal which vibrates at a frequency of 262.144 kHz. This frequency is eight times greater than a normal double pronged quartz, and it is indeed, the highest frequency of any watch today. A higher frequency means that the watch can measure a smaller interval of a second which translates to greater overall accuracy.
The case of the 98B142 is sculpted from solid stainless steel which has been PVD plated to a polished black finish. This exceptional timepiece measures in at 46.5mm for the diameter, and it rides high on the wrist with a case thickness of 14.8mm. The bezel is unidirectional and is used to measure elapsed time through a scale of white markers. The main crown is ridged which allows for the easy adjustment for both the time and date. The case protrudes slightly cupping the main crown protecting it from impacts which can potentially compromise the integrity of the movement and water resistance.
The bial is black and it features a guilloche design. The hour markers are luminous indexes with the exception of the twelve, which is the Bulova “tuning fork” logo. A conservative minute track is located on the flange and it features blue Arabic numerals and white markers. The hour and minute hands are also black PVD plated and offer lume for nighttime legibility. The sweeping seconds hand is blue matching the minutiae, it also carries the Precisionist logo as a counterweight. A large cutout date aperture is found at 3 o’clock with today’s date indicated by a blue triangle. As an added feature there is an internal dial which features a 24 hour scale.
The Bulova 98B142 Precisionist carries a thick rubber strap with a tang type buckle. This watch is water resistant to 300 meters (30 Atms), and retails for USD $499.

A higher crystal frequency does not imply greater accuracy. The accuracy depends on the long term stability of the crystal, not its frequency. A higher frequency could provide greater precision, but that increased precision does not provide any added benefit on a time piece that only displays time to the nearest 1/4 of a second or so and maybe 1/10 second on a chronograph version of this line of watches. This is the difference between accuracy and precision.

The most accurate watch I have is the Bulova UHF which is hardly off one second after a month. Whatever you call it, it works to make the watch more accurate than any others I know of, regardless of cost. And I paid less than $200 for it !!
