Prometheus Piranha Review

The 60 click unidirectional bezel is easy to grip, and has a nice smooth ratchet to it. No real play with the bezel, which is always a pet peeve of mine. I think one of the reasons I am drawn to the Prometheus Piranha so much is it combines some looks from other watches, while still having its own DNA. The shrouded case might remind many of a Seiko Sumo, or a Benarus Sea Snake, but the somewhat cushion case with its sharply angled lugs will remind some of say a Stowa Seatime, or many vintage divers from the late 60’s or 70’s. The bezel on this example, as well as the orange dial, has the dive markings filled in with black enamel. The black and white dial do not, somewhat reminiscent of a VSA Dive Master. I am not sure why they chose to give the bezel a different look between the 4 models, and I am kind of torn on which I prefer. The case is mostly brushed steel, with just the right amount of high polish on the bevels, which make the angled case stand out even more, and makes the case appear to have more dimension.

Another stand out of the Piranha, will be the aggressive and artistic etching of the Piranha itself on the case back. Some people had expressed that it is a little goofy looking, but I like it. It is funky for sure, but what the hell, it is a watch case back, and I think this is where companies can have a little fun with the designs.

The strap is of course, isofrane style, and made of PU (polyurethane) rubber. I have read some comments on the forums and blogs about the strap not really being up to par, and I guess it is just subjective. I have worn it on the supplied rubber the entire time, and have found it very comfortable. While it is not a soft and supple as an isofrane or a “Cuda” strap, it does the job very well. Would a nice vintage style link bracelet have added to the look of the Piranha? Im sure it would have, but it would have also probably raised the price to well over $500, and I think Prometheus was trying to keep budget in mind with this latest offering.

The lume is superb. No other way to say it. Prometheus made sure to really load up on the superluminova paint, and with that, night time viewing is no issue.

On the wrist, the Piranha is very comfortable. The short lug to lug and the flat case back allow it to really hug the wrist, and the watch actually appears, at least to me, to be a little smaller than 44mm. So for the people out there that do not like massive or oversized divers, I think this will be just perfect for you.

Like I said in the beginning, the Piranha is one of the best offerings from Prometheus so far. Usually I can nit pick and point out some things I would have changed or added, but with this example, I really cannot do that. Especially at the price the Piranha is selling for. Would I have preferred drilled lugs? Sure, it just makes strap changing a little quicker, but it is easy enough with these lugs to put the little screwdriver in there and pop the strap off without scratching the case. The Piranha is well machined and finished, and all the goodies we look for when it comes to the micro brand divers these days, all for under a $500 price tag. And If I forgot to mention, it comes in the zippered travel pouch that Prometheus has been using for a few years, which is one of my favorite packaging choices out there. It does not take up a lot of space, and it is reusable as well.

Hi Don,

Great review. It’s a very nice watch. Torn between the black and white. Was wondering what’s your wrist size? Just want to figure out whether it goes well with my 7.5 wrist. Also does it sits high or wraps flushed around your wrist?

Hello Gabe, my apologies for just seeing this. I believe I stated in the review or video, but my wrist is 7.5 inches as well, and the watch does not sit high at all. Very comfortable on the wrist.

Thanks for the comment and checking out the review.
