Frederique Constant Classics Index

by Michael Wolfe

The non-crown side of the case is unremarkable, but does show off the almost mirror like finish of the case. On the crown side of the case, one will find a 5mm push/pull crown. The crown is designed with the company logo and has a nice scalloped/gear that makes it quite easy to grasp. The crown engages with no play or wiggle in either setting position. I really appreciate the scalloped/gear machining of the crown, rather than a standard coin edge, which would just be far too plain in this instance. The crown machining adds to the overall elegant appearance of the watch in my opinion.

The Classics Index model is fitted with a domed sapphire crystal. I normally do not care for domed crystals, because they tend to distort the dial at certain angles, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue with this model. I believe the crystal has an ARcoating superior in quality, which keeps the glare and distortion to a minimum on this particular model. Beneath the large 35mm dial opening is a gorgeous, clean and uncluttered black dial, with limited branding above and below center dial. The font of the branding is perfect for the size and style of the watch. All of the hour markers have a high polished finish to correspond with the watchcase. Each hour marker is applied to the dial, which adds to the detail and elegant nature of the model. Roman numerals are applied at the 12 and 6 positions, which seems to add even further to the dressy appearance.

A large date window is positioned at the 3 o’clock position on the dial, which is quite legible. Surrounding the perimeter of the dial are the second markers. The second markers are painted on the dial in white, except for the 60 marker, which is red, adding a touch of flair to the overallappearance of the model. The Swiss Made designation is noted at the 6 o’clock position on the dial. The handset is a thin leaf style that is perfect for this type of watch. All hands have a high polished finish, corresponding with the case and dial marker finishes.

The case back is screwed down to the watchcase. The case back has various specifications of the model printed in black paint with the company name, logo and serial number at the center. Beneath the case backbeats an FC-303 Automatic Movement, which is actually a reliable Swiss Made unmodified Sellita SW-200. The movement has been highly accurate within +/-10 seconds a day since arrival and has the advertised 38-hour power reserve. The case back may be the only feature of the watch that disappoints slightly, as I would expect a somewhat engraved style case back on a watch that retails at thisprice point. I would have also have very much enjoyed seeing a full display case back, even though the movement is a base grade.
