Jenny Caribbean 300 Review

by Ariel Soltura

The watch, which comes hugging onto a white pillow, comes nicely wrapped as well, protecting it in transport on its way to your wrist. One of the coolest surprises for me was the gold colored Jenny hangtag, which to me, is synonymous with quality. On one side of the hang tag is the Jenny fish/Doxa logo and on the other, the Jenny name, with the words โ€œsymbol of qualityโ€ written on it. Past that, the Jenny box is pretty plain and simple, so Iโ€™ll move on into the meat and potatoes of the review.

Let me start off by saying that the dial on this particular blue Jenny Caribbean 300 Re-Edition is the most legible dial I have ever owned, which says a lot, since I have owned hundreds. The dial is a beautiful shade of deep rich blue, a blue that is often imitated but seldom duplicated. Youโ€™ll find three applied markers on the dial, with a forth being the border surrounding the date window, since Iโ€™m choosing to count that as one. One could argue that Jenny could have put applied markers over every hour, put personally, I love the aesthetic appeal this application method offers, and after having one in hand, Iโ€™m certain youโ€™ll agree. This faithful re-edition of the original Jenny comes in five different dial bezel color combos which are a black dial with either a orange or yellow bezel, a blue dial with a white bezel, an orange dial with an orange bezel or a silver dial with a black bezel.

The Jenny wording logo is traditionally placed below the 12 oโ€™clock marker and below it, in a smaller font, Automatic, which seems to be overplayed by many watch brands. Not saying that itโ€™s out of place, but I feel that I speak for many when I say, โ€œWe get it.โ€ Hovering just north of the 6 oโ€™clock marker, youโ€™ll find the Caribbean 300 designation, along with 300 meters/ 1000 feet. The words Swiss Made are divided by the 6 oโ€™clock marker, noting the Caribbeanโ€™s roots. The wording on this watch is crisp and clean, adding to the aforementioned legibility. The date window is positioned at the three, and itโ€™s a bright white, which plays well off of the two outer most concentric circles of the decompression bezel.

The case design is a work of art as it magically transforms the watch from one that many would pass up, due to its long lug-to-lug length, into a watch you donโ€™t ever want to take off. How does the Jenny Caribbean Re-Edition accomplish this feat? It turns down the lugs, giving a wrist hugging look and feel. When looking at it from an aesthetic point of view, youโ€™re not immediately reminded of any other watch, which mentally cements the thought that the watch youโ€™ve spent your hard earned money on is unique.

A friendโ€™s wife, who now owns an orange dial Jenny said it best. Each time her husband had shown her a new watch, her response had always been the same, โ€œit looks like every other watch youโ€™ve shown me.โ€ When she was shown the Jenny, her response was quite different, expressing herself by saying, โ€œwow, itโ€™s like nothing Iโ€™ve seen on your wrist, I like really like that!โ€ The crown, signed with Jennyโ€™s swordfish logo, sits nicely in the 3 oโ€™clock position. Its functionality is uninterrupted by the shoulderless case design. The anti-reflective coated crystal is made of flat sapphire which sits nicely flush with the coin edge bezel.

The Jennyโ€™s bezel could be a review of its own, as it has achieved a cult like following among divers. After all, while this watch is one of the most aesthetically pleasing watches in todayโ€™s market, make no mistake about it; itโ€™s a diverโ€™s dive watch through and through. Stainless steel wraps around the clear sapphire, exposing the decompression limit times, through what I describe as a three dimensional look. While the numbers are small, Jenny has mastered the art of legibility, and it is again exemplified in the bezel. A diamond shaped lume pip can be found underneath the bezel, giving it a cleaner look overall.

The case back, for me, is a work of art, as it combines unembellished detail; words that are seldom synonymous with one another. Jenny decided to go with a โ€œchunkyโ€ case back to balance out the downward turn of the lugs, allowing the watch to sit perfectly on your wrist. Around the beveled circumference of the case back youโ€™ll find your pertinent info. And at its core, the high polished Jenny swordfish with the words โ€œJenny Caribbeanโ€ in a high polish as well. And, as if you had forgotten, a quick reminder that this is the 50th anniversary re-edition model.

Great review, and I couldn’t agree more. My orange dial Jenny is an amazing watch, especially for the price.

Just acquired a Jenny 300 and it is top rate as is the customer service from Jenny. The only improvement to this reissue that I’d like to see is a domed crystal. To me, that would complete the nod to a vintage diver and avoid the flat, edge-to-edge design since the bezel is also sapphire.

All in all, it’s a gorgeous, comfortable, watch with one of the closest to original reissue styles. Wonderful job Jenny, and great review. Thanks.

Just picked up a silver dial 300 from the Doxa website. They are on sale as of today, Jan 20, 2019. Worth checking out of you have a hankering. sadly the blue model shown is sold out, as is the bead of rice bracelet option. But still a deal for a watch with great history that stayed somewhat close to the original.
