Interesting models from Breitling 2011

Breitling Watch News Watch Talk

Breitling does not need any long winded introduction from us. The Breitling brand has been synonymous with sport and aviation watches for years and has produced many well known models like the Navitimer and the SuperOcean line of dive watches. Breitling watches, generally speaking, incorporate the brands aesthetic DNA which includes large polished cases, distinctive bracelet design, and the rather baroque “rider tabs”  (the 60, 15, 30, and 45 minute bezel tabs). This year, Breitling has introduced a refreshed Aeromarine lineup that includes a few models that have broken the trend and might hint at a new look for Breitling.

Breitling SuperOcean GMT

  • 41mm Stainless Steel
  • Breitling 32 automatic movement
  • Sapphire with AR coating
  • 500m WR

The first thing you will notice about these new Breitling watches is the inclusion of a more traditionally styled bezel, gone are the engraved metal surfaces and rider tabs for something more modern and reserved. The Seawolf inspired markers and textured dial give the GMT a mix of luxury and military styling that matches well with its bidirectional GMT bezel. While case thickness is not listed, the width is a comfy 41mm and you can have your choice of a rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet. We love the matching red GMT hand and dial script for “Automatic”.

Breitling SuperOcean 44

  • 44mm Stainless Steel
  • Breitling 17 automatic movement
  • Sapphire with AR coating
  • 2000m WR

This is an upsized follow up to the 2010 SuperOcean which measured in at 42mm. 42mm was too small for some buyers and Breitling has released the 44mm version for these large wristed folk. The redesign of the SuperOcean was one of the first to show off a rider-tab-less design and has been largely successful. The colored elements (date border, name and seconds hand) can be had in white, yellow, blue, orange and the pictured red. The tiny amount of colour is nicely reserved and matches up nicely with the futuristic font used for the bezel and dial numbering.

Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 42

  • 42mm Stainless Steel
  • Breitling 17 automatic movement
  • Sapphire with AR
  • Mesh bracelet
  • 200m WR

The original SuperOcean heritage was released in 2007 in both 38mm and 46mm sizes, this new model continues the design and features a more current 42mm case size. The Heritage is an excellent design as it is retro but not cheeky. When Breitling styled the Heritage they actually made a beautiful watch that incorporates many great design elements from their past, much like Tudor did with the similarly named Heritage Chronograph. Releasing a model at 42mm is an excellent step for the Heritage line up and should make for a a great addition to the lineup and snatch up buyers looking for a well sized sport watch.

  2. OMG James. I love the Suoerocean 44. I was seriously considering buying the Superocean 2, but found it to small at 42mm. This model will be on the cards! I’ll go for the yellow coloured elements. I wish it came with the coloured chapter ring like the Superocean 2 though. 2000m WR is awesome compared to 1500m WR for the Superocean 2.

  5. Hi James, In my previous comment I stated that I would have preferred the Superocean 44 to have retained the coloured chapter ring , but what I forgot to mention is that it was also to thick on a 42mm dial. They should have used it on the 44mm but thinner.

  6. I am disappointed buying a Breitling superocean heritage 42 from Hour Glass, Sydney. Its accuracy is irratic. For the first two days it was fast by 8 seconds a day, next day fast by 4 seconds, and the third day 6 seconds. I took it back to Hour Glass and asked for a replacement and they refused. Other Sydney jewellers have given replacements to me in the past. Brietling Sydney Service Centre and Swiss Customer Service asked me to send it for regulation. I told them it is absurd to send a new for regulation given their hype that all their watches are COSC chronometer certified. I am a disappointed Breitling buyer.
