Omega has released three new watches commemorating the upcoming Winter Olympics slated to be held in Sochi early this year. The Swiss made brand is going to be this sporting eventโs official timekeeper. Omega has had an excellent relationship with the Olympics in the past, and has played the role of official timekeeper for both the Winter, and Summer versions of this acclaimed sporting event.
The one that weโll look at today is the Seamaster Planet Ocean Sochi Limited Edition. This watch comes in stainless steel and features a 45.5mm case diameter. The stainless steel is finely brushed and is fitted with a three piece matching bracelet.
A chromium nitride diverโs scale adorns the unidirectional bezel. Unidirectional bezels are a key component in most diving themed watches; this allows the wearer to measure elapsed time. The markers from 1-15 on the bezel are hued in blue, red, and white โ the flag colors of the Russian Federation. A luminous diving pearl is found at the 12 position, making the bezel functional in all lighting conditions.
The solid case back carries the Sochi 2014 Olympic logo in relief and it is engraved with the inscription โSI14โ. This watch is limited in number to 2014 pieces worldwide. The individual number of your watch out of the set is also engraved on the case back (XXXX/2014). At the 10 position on the case is a helium release valve. This feature allows for the automatic release of this gas when diving for extended periods of time. The main crown is screw locked, which aids in the water resistance, which stands at a superb 600 meters (2000 feet).
The dial is matte black with hour markers and hands coated with Super-LumiNova for optimal readability at night. The lume emits a blue light for all of the elements with the sole exception of the minutes hand which casts off a green light. At the 3 position, there is a small date aperture.
Powering this watch is a self-winding mechanical movement Calibre Omega 8500, which is fitted with the award winning Co-Axial escapement. The movement also comes with Omegaโs silicone balance wheel which alternates at a constant 28,800 VpH.
