– A Column Wheel is a mechanism that allows for the smooth engagement of the chronograph by using a column with a seven or nine tooth gear as opposed to a cam switch. This mechanism is notoriously difficult to design and manufacture. Therefore, chronographs which use the Column Wheel are more expensive. Column Wheels are also known as Pillar Wheels or Swiss Castles.
