Panerai Luminor GMT 44mm
Though one would never guess it by the name, the Panerai Luminor GMT was actually fashioned for the sea. Most GMT models signify flying, where the changing of time zones is a regular occurrence. The GMT on this Luminor model pays homage to the Greenwich Meridian, which was and still is today essential to sailors. Sailors used the Meridian to calculate longitude which determined their vessel’s position. Today’s GMT from the Luminor collection indicates a second time zone on the watch. 
The Luminor GMT is now featured in a slightly smaller case size of 44mm (the old version was 47mm). The smaller case size makes this watch easier to wear when engaging in dives. The case isn’t quite as thick as the older model either. The case material still comes in stainless steel and still features the prominent lugs and iconic crown guard that this collection is famous for. The crown guard or as Panerai refers to it – the Drawbridge presses firmly on the main crown sealing the watch from moisture or dust and aids in the water resistance of the watch, which stands at 300 meters (30 ATM).
Driving this watch is the OP VIII caliber which is automatic. The movement is certified a chronometer by the COSC for its accuracy. The movement alternates at 28,800 VpH (4 Hz) and features a 42 hour power reserve. The movement also features a personalized Panerai oscillating rotor and an Incabloc shock resistant system.
The dial is black and carries luminous hour markers using both indexes and Arabic numerals at the 12 and 6 positions. At the 9 position is located the small seconds counter in a silvered subdial, which contrasts nicely against the dial. The partially skeletonized, rhodium colored hands are also coated in lume allowing for legibility of the dial even during low light conditions. The date aperture is located at the 3 o’clock position and is enhanced by a magnifying convex lens placed in the crystal.
The crystal is made from sapphire and is 3.5mm thick, which protects the watch from the pressures of the deep and scratches that can mar the beauty of this piece. This superbly crafted timepiece is fitted with a brown alligator leather strap and comes with an additional strap and a stainless steel screwdriver to make the change.
