The Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Carbon Red Magic 45mm
In January of 1980, something special happened to the world of horology. Carlo Crocco launched Hublot with a watch that for the first time sought to combine gold with rubber. This, like the launch of the Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet only 8 years before, was a game changer. The case of the classic Hublot was fashioned after the porthole of a ship. The brand became an overnight success.
Fast forward to the present and we find Hublot with an armada of limited editions and innovations that have rocked the watch making arena. One such piece is the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Carbon Red Magic which comes in the perfect gent’s size of 45mm. The case of this watch is crafted completely from carbon fiber; Hublot is one of only two brands in the world to have successfully accomplished this feat. The bezel lugs are made from black composite resin equipped with miniature titanium screws. On the bezel are found larger titanium screws with the famous ‘H’ shape branding this watch. The bezel also features black PVD titanium that falls in line with the general color scheme of the case.
At first glance, one can see just how unique this timepiece is with Hublot’s usage of a red sapphire crystal which protects the delicate skeletonized dial. The case back also features a sapphire crystal, though this one is crystal clear revealing the precise self-winding movement. There is a counter at the 3 position which indicates the chronograph minutes via a Ferrari red hand. The chronograph seconds displayed using a central hand is also hued in the same red. The date display is also at the 3 o’clock position and is offered in yellow in keeping with Ferrari’s colors.
The chronograph uses a column wheel mechanism which negates the jerk of the chronograph seconds when this complication is activated. The chronograph is fitted with a Flyback function which allows the wearer to time successive events without the need to stop and return to zero. The movement in this model is the HUB1241which beats at 28,800 alternations per hour.
The strap is made from two materials – black rubber, and black Schedoni leather. The strap is hand stitched with an exuberant red contrast stitching which adds to the sporty look of this piece. Securing this watch to the wrist is a deployant clasp made from carbon fiber and black titanium.
