Shinola, known in the past for their shoe polish, has hit the market hard in the last year and has created quite the buzz since. Building handmade bicycles, leather goods and now watches, Shinola is bringing back the term “Built In The United States”.  With the recent craze over the new American brand, we had to experience it for ourselves. I put in a request for The Runwell 47mm, received it later that week, and have been critiquing it ever since. Let’s see how The Runwell 47mm breaks down.

Presentation is a must these days. When a consumer purchases a product, its almost standard to expect a great presentation. When you first open your package, a hand written “Thank You” card will greet you. This is customary to every order that is sent out to the consumers. It’s safe to say Shinola leaves no rock unturned with their presentation.

* The Runwell 47mm was shipped in Shinola’s uncorporate packaging. Packaging used for corporate purchases and limited editions. All regular lines are shipped in the hickory box found inside this package.*

The Runwell 47mm arrived in an oversized black box used for their limited edition models. Although not a limited edition, I was thoroughly impressed with the overall presentation that is offered when purchasing their limited runs. Inside the box, “The Book of Craft” is the first you come across. Here, Shinola gives you a page-by-page look at how their watches are created, the process of their leather goods, a look inside the factory that produces their paper goods, and a glimpse into the production of the bicycle line. All of which are proudly made here in America.

The Runwell 47mm sits inside a handmade hickory box, protected by a cardboard sleeve, with the Shinola logo, building, and the word Detroit branded into the side of the box. Most companies do offer up a really nice box these days, but I do have to give credit to Shinola for offering up a quailty packaging for their watches. Inside you will find The Runwell 47mm sitting inside a recessed holder and a can of Shinola leather care balm to maintain your leather strap. Also included is a metal authenticity card.

  1. Thanks for a thorough review if the watch. I like how you will say what you don’t like as well, adding balance and making this a proper review. Too many watch ‘reviews’ today on other popular watch review sites are pretty much press releases that look like reviews.
    Do you know how these are selling? Have they taken off?

  2. The Shinola is obviously a quality timepiece;
    however, the Shinola website could describe the watch better.
    It is difficult to determine which watches that have illuminated numerals in the dark.
    The Chinola, that I acquired, has illuminated hour markers, but the numerals are not lit during darkness.
    Nevertheless, I am very pleased with my purchase.
    However, I do wish the description, of the watch models, was more complete.
