Momentum VS-3 Altimeter

The buttons on the left side of the case positioned at the eight and the ten access the various modes and the light, which happens to be quite strong during the darkest of hours.

The case back is stainless steel and offers a battery change screw down hatch. If you can find a nickel in between your couch fold, then you have all of the necessary tools needed to open the VS-3. As usual, the watchโ€™s pertinent info is on the case back. Remember that should you decide to change the battery out yourself and you damage the watch, Momentum will not cover it under warranty. While this is a no-brainer for some, Momentum chose to not only include this statement in their instruction manual, but itโ€™s also inscribed on the case back.

The strap is made of polyurethane and is very comfortable and lightweight. Due to the strapโ€™s aeration holes, not only does it breath well, allowing your wrist to stay cool, it dries fast as heck too. The tang style buckle is stainless steel with no logo upon it. I believe some Momentum branding would have added a nice touch to spice up the overall plain watch design.

Normally, this would be a section where I talk about the reviewed watchโ€™s movement, but since the VS-3 is powered by quartz technology, Iโ€™ll briefly highlight some of the watchโ€™s key features instead. As mentioned, this watch enables you to determine many things, such as barometric pressure (aka atmospheric pressure). Using graphical displays of pressure changes, you can better predict weather patterns. In addition, the pressure at sea level vs. a certain pressure change gives you your altitude, which is also displayed in graphical form. The compass feature allows the watch to find magnetic north after adjusting for declination (the angle on a horizontal plane between true north and magnetic north). While it would be awesome to be able to mention each feature this watch possesses, itโ€™s simply impossible to do so. So, Iโ€™ll bullet point several more that make this watch an extremely useful tool.

Iโ€™ll admit that my initial impression of the Momentum VS-3 was that of an entry-level ABC watch, but after letting it live on my wrist for several weeks, and putting it through the toughest of paces, including gritty grime, dirt, sweat and worst of all, my 6 year old son, this watch would do just fine on the wrist of Bear Grills, crazy outdoor extremist extraordinaire. Most that will purchase the Momentum VS-3 are real people, real campers, and real hikers, all with real world budgets. With a retail price hovering near the dollar amount one would pay for a used camping tent, the value is hard to ignore. So, put one on and explore life to the fullest with a few extra bucks in your wallet.

Great looking watch. I’d be tempted to try it out if it weren’t for the size of the face. My favorite part of the watch is the back battery access area. The smooth look and what appears to be a non-hairpulling surface is what would draw me in. Well written review. It appears that you do indeed have a passion for watches. Keep them coming.

How’s the accuracy of the ABC features?

Dave, as a LE official, I use only two of the three available; the baro for weather and the compass for direction. So far, spot on!

Nice review…
But the watch looks like a copy of Suunto watches!
