Mido Runs Contest to Pick New Watch Design

Watchmaker Mido is offering the public the opportunity to help choose the design of the companyโ€™s next modelโ€”and win prizes for doing so. The Swiss brand has just launched an interesting promotion that allows watch lovers to vote for one of three watch designs created by important designers within the industry.

Mido will produce the winning design as a limited edition. In addition to bragging rights, a lucky few voters will have the chance to win one of the limited edition watches or a trip to London.

This promotion is unusual for the watch industry, especially a member of The Swatch Group, which is prone to keeping company business private and allowing only a chosen few employees to speak about corporate policies. The idea of giving one designer credit for a watch design is a change of direction for the Mido brand.

Possibly Mido has decided to feature a group of designer to get more attention from the press and the public. In this day of social media, people have a sense of curiosity about the stories behind products and the creative minds behind them. Why not tap into that curiosity with a contest that could make one of those previously unsung watch designers an instant star in the field? After all, those reality shows that offer overnight stardom have been getting huge ratings for years.

To introduce the three designers to the public Mido has produced a series of videos for each designer. The creative trio, which consists of Eric Giroud, Sebastien Perret and Lorenzo Vallone, all have a history designing for both mainstream luxury watchmakers and smaller independent brands but are unknown outside the industry.

Those interested in casting a vote for one of the three can do so on the Mido website until October 15, 2015. The winning watch design will make its debut at Baselworld 2016.
